Jonah Shacknai Honors Son With Youth Sports Charity

The one-time resident of the Spreckels mansion discusses new effort in lead up to today, when his son Max would have turned 7.

Jonah Shacknai, the Arizona pharmaceuticals mogul whose , has launched a charity to honor the boy, who would have celebrated a birthday Thursday. 

The organization, MaxinMotion, reported the Arizona Republic, is named for Max Shacknai, who would have turned 7. It will fund athletic endeavors for children in low-income families who cannot afford the activities.

Jonah Shacknai told the newspaper that “soccer was Max's passion” and that it was “fitting to remember Max in a fashion that's going to do some good.”

The Phoenix Business Journal also reported on MaxinMotion, naming the charity's board members, who include executives linked to the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Max's death stemmed from head injuries he suffered in a July 11 fall at the historic Spreckels mansion.

Two days later, Jonah Shacknai's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, was found nude, bound by her hands and feet, with a shirt gathered around her neck. The  and determined that she hung herself.

The Zahau family has challenged the suicide finding on , while urging the state to open a new investigation. Max Shacknai's mother also has sought more answers in her son's death by .

Shacknai remains the owner of the mansion, though buyers are in place while the residence . He had maintained it as a summer home.
