CORONADO, CA — U.S. Naval Air Station North Island will host the 29th annual Rear Adm. James G. Prout III Memorial Golf Tournament Friday at the base's Sea 'N' Air Golf Course.
Prout, a former commander of the USS Carl Vinson Strike Group, died in an F/A-18 Hornet accident in northern New Mexico in 1995. Prout and Cmdr. Joseph Kleefisch, the pilot of the two-seat training version of the aircraft, crashed while flying through inclement weather over the northern New Mexico mountains.
After Prout's death, his wife Kathy Prout and friends launched a scholarship fund in his honor.
