Naval Base Coronado's Child Development Center Evacuated: UPDATE

BREAKING: The Child Development Center was evacuated Thursday due to a foul smell, which was initially believed to be a ruptured pipe.

Updated at 3:50 p.m. Thursday

CORONADO, CA – Youngsters at Naval Base Coronado's child development center were evacuated safely Thursday afternoon when employees detected an odor mistakenly thought to be due to a ruptured gas pipe, according to Navy officials.

All of the children were moved to the Lowry movie theater on base a block away about 1 p.m., according to Navy spokesman Brian O'Rourke. The odor turned out to be coming from a dried-out, unused toilet in the building and the children were never in danger.

"They're all coloring and watching movies," O'Rourke said. "It was a great field trip for the kids."

The staff did what they were trained to do and evacuated the youngsters, all 4 years old or younger, according to O'Rourke.
