New Swell, Large Waves Coming to San Diego Beaches

SAN DIEGO COUNTY -- A respite from the big waves and strong rip currents that have been affecting San Diego County's beaches is expected today, but a second swell with even larger waves is right around the corner.

Various National Weather Service hazard messages and advisories were in effect since last Friday, with the most recent expiring Monday night. Another high surf advisory warning of 5- to 8- foot surf with occasional sets to 11 feet are expected south of Del Mar will remain in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Thursday.

"A northwest swell with a long period will arrive at the beaches Wednesday morning, peak Wednesday evening and gradually decrease Thursday,''according to the weather service. "High surf is expected, particularly for southern San Diego County.''

Forecasters said large waves and strong rip currents would create hazardous swimming conditions and up the risk for drowning. Larger sets may even reach high enough to sweep people off jetties and rocks.

"If you plan to hit the beaches this week, be alert to the potential for strong rip currents and heed the advice of lifeguards,'' according to the weather service.

A third northwest swell is expected to arrive Saturday and bring with it another round of big waves, according to the NWS.

"The beaches will remain active this week with periods of high surf expected through the upcoming weekend,'' according to the weather service.
