Nordstrom to Close San Diego Horton Plaza Store

The downtown San Diego location has been open since 1985.

San Diego, CA — Nordstrom announced its plans Friday to close its Westfield Horton Plaza store in downtown San Diego.

The store that opened in 1985 will serve customers through Aug. 26, according to a company statement.

"We've been in business at Horton Plaza for 31 years and we've loved serving our customers here," said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom. "These are always tough decisions to make, but in taking a look at the store's performance and our business needs into the future, we believe this is the best direction to take."

The closure will impact about 180 non-seasonal employees, according to the company.

"We've told our people that with opportunities at our nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores, we will have a spot for everyone who wants to stay with the company," the company said.

The store's three other San Diego locations include Nordstrom University Town Centre, which will relocate to a new space in 2017, as well as Nordstrom Fashion Valley and Nordstrom North County in Escondido.

Nordstrom Rack locations include Carmel Mountain Plaza, Nordstrom Rack Plaza Bonita and Nordstrom Rack Grand Plaza, with Nordstrom Rack at the Shops at La Jolla Village scheduled to open in October.

Horton Plaza store employees who do not have a role at another store and remain until their last scheduled shift will be provided with a separation plan, the company said.
