Putting a Little Culture in Our Pop

Who says there’s no culture in pop culture?

A few local institutions are working to change that with pop-oriented exhibits and events.

On Friday, the Women’s Museum of California at Liberty Station in Point Loma opened an exhibit on Wonder Woman.

Titled Wonder Women: On Paper and Off, it explores the paths women have taken through the comic and graphic industries starting in the early 20th century through today's comics and illustrations.

Wonder Women: On Paper and Off will feature the historical collection of Trina Robbins and original artwork by artists Joyce Farmer, Mary Fleener, Carol Lay, Mimi Pond and Andrea Tsurumi. The display shows how comics have changed since 1914 as well as the process artists go through to create these images.

There will also be panel discussions on July 18 and August 15 with pioneering female artists sharing their experiences working in the comics industry.

The exhibit runs through September 1 at the Women's Museum of California in Liberty Station.

Meanwhile, on July 27, the New Children’s Museum in downtown San Diego will have a Superheroes Night Out. The event will feature superhero-themed activities, including a superhero training obstacle course.

There will also be food from local restaurants, a hosted bar, dancing and costume contests and prizes during from an opportunity drawing.

Tickets are required, ranging from $25 to $35 but this could just the medicine you’ll need to handle that post Comic-Con letdown.

If you haven’t visited the Museum, this will be an excellent opportunity to take your child or a niece or nephew or family friend. So, go out and put some culture in your pop culture.
