Questions Haunt Death of Coronado Navy SEAL Trainee James Lovelace: Report

NBC News reported Friday that accounts are emerging, painting a darker picture of the training death.

CORONADO, CA: Questions are haunting the recent death of a Navy SEAL trainee at Naval Base Coronado, according to news reports.

Seaman James "Derek" Lovelace, 21, was pulled from a pool Friday, May 6 during a training exercise called "drown proofing," in which prospective SEALs tread water while in uniform and wearing a diving mask, according to the Navy.

The Navy said the exercise is performed during the first week of training "to assess and develop students' competency, confidence and safety in the water."

But NBC News, which was among the first to report Lovelace's death, reported in a follow-up story Friday that "accounts are emerging that challenge the Navy's narrative of what happened and paint a darker picture, alleging that the death may have been the result of an instructor going too far."

Lovelace's family members are among those questioning the Navy's account of the young sailor's death, according to NBC.
