Sailor Who Died In Fall Aboard USS Nimitz In Coronado ID'd

Juan Jose Garcia-Herrera, 21, of Chicago, died after falling from an aircraft elevator aboard the USS Nimitz in Coronado.

CORONADO, CA — A U.S. Navy sailor who died after falling from an aircraft elevator aboard the USS Nimitz in Coronado has been identified.

Juan Jose Garcia-Herrera, 21 of Chicago, fell from one of the lowered elevators of the aircraft carrier around 9 p.m. Friday while it was in port at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, according to Navy officials.

Garcia-Herrera suffered serious injuries and was transported to UCSD Regional Trauma Center, where he died around 2 a.m. Saturday.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service was looking into the cause of the accident.

Garcia-Herrera, a logistics specialist seaman, enlisted in the Navy in January 2017 and reported to the Nimitz less than six months later, after completing logistics specialist "A" school, the Navy Times reported.
