Silver Strand MOAA Sponsors Coronado Community Events

Written by Joyce Quartly

The Coronado Chamber of Commerce presented its annual “Salute to the Military “Ball on March 29, 2014 at the Hotel Del Coronado. At this gala event, the Silver Strand Chapter of MOAA, Military Officers of America, sponsored a table of ten guests to recognize active duty military personnel and their spouses for their military and community service. Special honors went to the Blue and Gold commanders and the two rotating crews of the USS CORONADO (LCS4), the Navy's newest littoral combat ship, named for the city of Coronado to honor its long-time relationship with the US NAVY.

The Silver Strand Chapter of MOAA is one of the sponsors of the ship, officially commissioned on April 5, 2014 and home ported in San Diego. The chapter is also a sponsor for the Coronado NJROTC cadets that served as the color guard for the commissioning ceremony. Additionally, the chapter sponsors a recently formed division of the Sea Scouts in the south Bay, allowing boys from underprivileged families to learn leadership and seamanship skills.

The guest of Honor /Speaker was Vice Admiral Thomas H. Copeman III, USN Commander Naval Surface Forces, whose many accolades to all the troops from the Pearl Harbor Survivors to the Wounded Warriors at Balboa Medical Center, met with resounding applause. As guests enjoyed a “star-spangled” menu and danced to Rockola , a local favorite, attired in their dress uniforms, tuxedos, and ball gowns, the patriotic fervor permeated throughout the very special and memorable evening. Thank you to the Silver Strand Chapter of MOAA for your support of military and other community programs.
