Silver Strand State Beach, Imperial Beach Closed Due to Tijuana River Sewage Runoff

BREAKING: The closure was extended Friday afternoon to include Silver Strand.

CORONADO, CA — A beach closure was issued Friday afternoon for the Silver Strand State Beach shoreline, and will be in effect indefinitely.

The closure means the public should avoid water contact along the Pacific Ocean shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border to Avenida Lunar in Coronado — including Border Field State Park, Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Imperial Beach and Silver Strand.

The closure is due to sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana River, according to the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health.
