Teen Kills Pedestrian in Hit and Run

17-year-old Alabama teen charged as an adult after killing a pedestrian in a hit and run car accident.

17-year-old Alicia Baker struck and killed a pedestrian, 41-year-old Evaristo Hernandez, with her car late Saturday night. The young woman failed to help him after the accident, but did drive to the Spanish Fort Police Department to file a report. A false report- claiming she was the victim of a hit and run car accident.

Across the United States, a pedestrian is injured by a motor vehicle roughly once every eight minutes. Alabama’s Mobile and Baldwin counties, where Baker resides, continuously rank amongst the highest in the nation for pedestrian accidents, according to prominent Spanish Fort pedestrian accident attorneys.

Baker’s family initially fell for their daughter’s false accident report. Said to be a good student and active in various community activities, they had little reason not to. But her story quickly unraveled as news reports came out the following morning. Baker confessed to her family after they began questioning her tale.

Police arrested the young woman early Monday morning. Prosecutors claim the girl remains uncooperative.

“Walking in the United States comes with a risk,” a Fairhope accident lawyer of Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC said. “A pedestrian setting out to walk is one-and-a half times more likely to die on a trip than a passenger in the car.”

That statistic may not come off surprising. But a child in the eyes of the law covering up a murder may strike some as more unfathomable.

“The privilege of driving comes with a duty of care to others. When a driver fails to exercise reasonable care, that driver is said to be negligent.” the law offices of Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC, said.

The Baldwin County District Attorney agrees. They are charging the 17-year-old as an adult with a felony involving a death. Baker, who made bail set at $35,000, is currently wearing a GPS ankle monitor and is allowed to drive to limited locations.

Labs are still working on Baker’s toxicology report and the victim’s autopsy. Little is currently known about the deceased.
