51 Tavern Replaces Recess Eatery in Highland Park

If you haven’t visited Highland Park lately, now is the time to go. This neighborhood is on the rise, and with it, another fun culinary stop.

Replacing Recess Eatery is now the happening 51 Tavern, sporting an inviting patio with a fireplace, some groovy fixtures, and some notable menu items.

Sharable plates are the standard here. Celebrity & Patina-trained chef Sevan Abdessian, formerly a private chef for such notables as Adam Sandler, Rod Stewart, John Travolta and many others has made some menu improvements over the offerings from Recess Eatery.

A must is the Sev’s Sliders, with ground sirloin, applewood smoked bacon, confit tomato, mustard aioli, Danish bleu, arugula and fries. Too bad we were sharing plates, as I wished I had hoarded another. They were so good.

I also loved the Fried Cauliflower Sack, with buttermilk, flour, garlic, smoked paprika, lemon zest and caper remoulade. Sometimes paprika does a number on me, but this was on the milder side, which I prefer.

I’d like to try this place again sometime, to sample some of the other items along with a few signature cocktails that looked inventive, without being overdone.

Sit on the patio, if the weather permits. Even on a cold night, the roaring fireplace will keep you toasty.
