CULVER CITY, CA — Culver City is hosting several free events for United Against Hate Week, which takes place nationwide Oct. 18-24.
"Through powerful stories, meaningful conversations, and opportunities to take action, we'll celebrate diversity, stand against hate, and build a stronger, more inclusive community," an announcement from the city said.
The first event in Wednesday's United Against Hate "double header" is a panel discussion featuring diverse personal stories about the forgotten histories and systemic oppression that have influenced the world. The event is presented by the city's Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee and is set for 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the Culver City Senior Center, 4095 Overland Ave., in rooms B45 and B47. Register to attend here.
A second event, starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Senior Center, is presented by the city and nonprofit partner Right to Be. The event will offer training in "practical, accessible tools to help people show up with greater self-awareness, connection, and care," officials said. The event will focus on emotional intelligence as a core skill for shaping culture, rather than just managing communication. Register for the event here.
On Friday, Oct. 23, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, attendees can learn what the latest data reveals about hate in Los Angeles County and what community members can do about it.
"Dive into key findings from the 2024 LA County Hate Crime Report, which documented record-high reported hate crimes targeting several communities, including African Americans, LGBTQ+ individuals, Jewish people, Latino/as, Middle Easterners, women, Israelis, Muslims, and Scientologists," according to the city's announcement.
The report also highlights significant increases in hate crimes in schools and incidents related to conflicts in the Middle East, officials said.
"More than numbers, these findings offer an opportunity to better understand the forces behind hate and learn what practical tools are being used to recognize, respond to, and help dismantle hate in our communities," according to the city.
Friday's event will take place in the Garden Room of the Veterans Memorial Building, 4117 Overland Ave. Register to attend here.
