Bike to Work Day Festivities
Locals encouraged to ride bikes during "Bike Week L.A."

Today is officially Bike to Work Day.
It is part of “Bike Week L.A.” when people around the city are encouraged to ride their bikes to work. Anyone who takes a bike or a bike helmet on board a Metro bus or train today can ride for free.
Culver City was recently recognized as a "Bicycle Friendly Community," receiving an honorable mention from the League of American Bicyclists, according to Jim Shanman, co-founder of the .

He said given the fact about half of all local trips people take are three miles or less, biking is the way to go.
“By encouraging people to bike or walk to their destinations, so many transformative things happen," Shanman said. "For starters, we encourage the "buy local" philosophy. Local businesses do better, residents become healthier and traffic can be reduced. Together, this creates a more livable community. Additionally, being known as a bike friendly community, especially one within biking distance to local beaches, attracts a younger, wealthier population, further underscoring the value of "bike-friendly.”

The coalition is encouraging Culver City residents to stop by local businesses today on their way to and from work. is offering a 10 percent discount from 7-9 a.m. for anyone who rides a bicycle. There will also be a happy hour from 4-7 p.m. at .
In addition, the is still looking for volunteers for Culver City’s annual bike count on Saturday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 23.
