Experience the Book Arts in Mar Vista
BookArtsLa is offering classes in letterpress printing and bookbinding in June and July. All levels welcome.
BookArtsLA is a non-profit organization devoted to bringing the beauty of printing, binding and collecting artist’s and other handmade books to the public. BookArtsLA’s light filled 1600 square foot studio space houses antique letterpresses, a working bindery and exhibition space. The organization offers a variety of classes, workshops, lectures and exhibitions conducted by celebrated book artists aimed at all levels, from experienced practitioners to those just discovering the art form.

Do you want to learn about the myriad structures, styles and possibilities of book arts but are unable to commit to a five week class?
The ONEDAY Book Arts Intensive is the class for you. Join instructors Danita Rafalovich and Marcia Moore for a one day exploration of book structures both historic and contemporary. Students will learn eight exciting, easily doable book structures to use as journals, gifts and other artworks. Paper choices, resources and tools will be discussed and demonstrated. Students will leave class with a trove of information and a wonderful collection of beautiful useable books.

Introduction to Letterpress: Setting Type & Printing by Hand
Letterpress is a centuries old method of printing done by impressing metal type into paper through by a printing press. Students will learn the basics of letterpress printing by hand setting metal type and printing it on the studio’s Vandercook letterpress. We will gain hands-on experience of setting, observe how different typefaces affect the meaning of the text, and discuss the basics of fine typography and good presswork including set up, inking and impression. Everyone will print a keepsake to take away with them.

Explore the beauty of paste paper. Make exquisite papers to use in all of your projects especially book covers.

The Nag Hamaddi
Nag Hammadi Codex with Michael Burke - Saturday and Sunday July 25 and 26, 9 am to 4 PM
Based on historic bindings discovered in Nag Hammadi Egypt in December 1945. Local farmers found a sealed earthenware jar containing thirteen leather-bound papyrus codices dating to the 2nd century AD.
Join us for this weekend workshop constructing this ancient binding using leather and papyrus.
Michael Burke is a UK binder who studied bookbinding with Dominic Riley and paper conservation with Karen Zukor, both in San Francisco, where he lived from 1994-2001.
$300 plus a materials fee of $50 paid to instructor.
