El Pollo Loco Fundraiser for Charlie Hernandez June 1st

Charlie's generosity at the Culver City Senior Center will be remembered

Every now and then, you meet someone who puts other people first. In this myopic town, many are overly focused on their own problems, yet there was a fellow who worked at the Culver City Senior center who gladly embodied the many traits of altruism-Charlie Hernandez.

For those of you who knew Charlie, you knew that he was one who was always ready to lend a helping hand.

I help coordinate a karaoke program at the Culver City Senior Center on Tuesdays. I could always count on Charlie and his team to lend their expertise in setting up the equipment, arranging the chairs, and helping to facilitate the mechanics of the program.

My friend Evelyn has had many health challenges over the past few years, yet Charlie was always there to grab her a cup of coffee, and lend his assistance at the welcome desk where she volunteers.

The fluidity of the Senior Center owes a lot to this remarkable individual.

A few weeks ago I was told that Charlie was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was only 48. His wife and children are in El Salvador, and they do not have adequate funds to fly him back to his country of origin.

We are relying upon the generosity of community members to help Charlie's family achieve their dream of getting Charlie back home. Many have made generous donations at the front desk of the senior center in Charlie's honor. Also on the agenda is a fundraiser at El Pollo Loco on June 1st for those who want to contribute to his cause.

We all have problems, but hearing about the early demise of Charlie reminds me that life can be very unpredictable at times and not very fair. I take pride in knowing that I have helped to donate to a family in need, by giving back to somebody who was generous enough to make my time at the Senior Center a joyous one every day.

Rest in peace sweet Charlie Hernandez.
