"Emperor Jones," the Broadway play adapted to a film directed by Eugene O'Neill, stars Paul Robeson as the Railroad Porter Brutus Jones who gambles, commits murder and is jailed. He escapes the chain-gang by beating a prison guard as he makes his way to a remote island in the West Indies and becomes the Emperor.
