Seasonal & Holidays

Head to Oceanside for Some Family Holiday Fun

Only a few hours south of Culver City, Oceanside is an affordable getaway

One of my favorite seaside communities these days is Oceanside. Relatively affordable compared to other beachside communities, it’s worth discovering if you’ve never been there. Here are some upcoming events for you and your family to enjoy during the upcoming holiday season.

O’side Turkey Trot, Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot has grown into a north county Thanksgiving tradition and is the perfect SoCal-style start to the holiday weekend. Last year, more than 10,000 participants ran and walked the five mile, 5K, Combo Run (both distances) and kids courses on one of the most scenic, oceanfront courses in America. Plus, a portion from each entry fee may be designatto go to the Oceanside school or non-profit of the participant’s choice, or to the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation. Since it began, the O’side Turkey Trot has raised more than $210,000.Participants can take advantage of a special room rate of $139 per night at the nearby SpringHill Suites Marriott Oceanside, which overlooks the both the pier and Turkey Trot course. After the race, runners can enjoy a soak at the roof top pool with panoramic ocean views, then head to the adjacent Hello Betty restaurant for a cocktail and delicious eats.

Oceanside Tree Lighting & Holiday Sunset Market, Dec. 3

On Thu, Dec. 3 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Oceanside will welcome the holiday season with a grand Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at Regal Center Plaza at 401 Mission Ave. in downtown Oceanside. This family-friendly event will be filled with activities for the whole family. Children can visit with Santa Claus, create a craft, enjoy the zip-line, tree climb, bounce houses and games or take a ride to the pier in the horse-drawn carriage. After the tree lighting ceremony, visitors can head over to the Sunset Market, which transforms into a Holiday Gift Market throughout December (closed Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve) and offers a great selection of gifts, plus music and a children’s activity area. 5th Annual Christmas Concert at Mission San Luis Rey, Dec. 4

The historic church at Mission San Luis Rey is a majestic, spiritual setting for listening to traditional Christmas carols during the Mission’s 5th Annual Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015. The concert is followed by a dessert reception in the Sacred Garden surrounded by thousands of holiday lights. Tickets range in price from $40 to $60 per person and proceeds benefit preservation and maintenance of the church. The mission is located at 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside.
