I haven't been in grammar school in quite a while, but I was taken back in time when I had a chance to visit Recess Eatery, one of the newer arrivals to Highland Park.
As with many underserved communities, Highland Park is undergoing renovation, and with it's gentrification comes new and exciting opportunities for tourism.
Recess Eatery sports a bit of the popular architecture that permeates many eating establishments lately, thanks to Spacecraft Design Group, with open ceilings and a groovy vibe. But its school day charm gives it a nice twist. Thankfully, there’s no homework.
From what I've heard, Recess is already known for their outstanding cocktails, and from the looks of some of my dining companions, the libations were doing their job in helping to erase the LA traffic woes.
I was particularly impressed with the wow factor of their Mary’s Pigtails cocktail, a fashionable Bloody Mary. Nice touch with the bacon on top.

I also loved their Salmon Benedict. This dish can be hit and miss with me, but here, the fish was nice and smoky, with the poached eggs cooked to perfection. The hollandaise sauce was over-the-top, adding some additional zing and outstanding flavor. Chef Sevan Abdessian’s lineage with Patina certainly was obvious with this dish.
Recess will be opening for brunch on March 5th, and from the looks of the offerings, I'm sure it will be a big hit.
