Calif. Ranks Among Best States To Retire

Despite being one of the priciest places to call home, California ranked as one of the best states to retire, according to a new study.

CALIFORNIA – California is beloved for its beaches and beautiful weather, but with the high cost of living, is the Golden State among the best states to retire? Despite being one of the priciest places to call home, California ranked as the 15th best state to retire, according to a new study.

Personal finance website WalletHub compared all 50 states across 41 key metrics. The website considered adjusted cost of living, weather and quality of public hospitals among other factors.

Not surprisingly, California ranked 49th for adjusted cost of living. The state also ranked 45th for percentage of population aged 65 and older, as well as 41st in annual cost of in-home services and 39th in elderly-friendly labor market.

The Golden State fared better in other categories. California ranked 30th in health care facilities per capita, 24th in property crime rate, eighth in WalletHub's taxpayer ranking, and third in life expectancy.

Almost 30 percent of all non-retired adults have no retirement savings, according to WalletHub. So affordability, in addition to health-related factors and overall quality of life, is one of the most important factors when choosing a place to live out the golden years.

Florida was named the best state to retire, followed by Colorado, South Dakota, Iowa and Virginia. The worst states to retire included Kentucky, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Mississippi and Arkansas, according to WalletHub.
