Sister Act Rocks at the Westchester Playhouse
Never has going to church been so much fun!
Remember Whoopi Goldberg donning a nun’s habit in 1992? Ah yes, what a fun movie! And now, I had a chance to re-live the memories with a riveting rendition of SISTER ACT now playing at the Westchester Playhouse through April 21.
I’m always in awe of any theatrical production, and this one was no exception. Lots of moving parts in this rendition, with the actors multi-tasking in multiple roles involving several costume changes, choreography, singing, dancing, and of course, a colorful array of dialogue. Considering the breadth of this production, it was much more involved that other performances I’ve also enjoyed by the Kentwood Players.
The story is an uplifting tale about disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder and is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle imposed by uptight Mother Superior.

Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newly-found sisterhood.
Filled with uplifting gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story, SISTER ACT is a sparkling musical tribute to the universal power of friendship. By the way, there are some fine pipes on these nuns as well. Boy, can they sing!
