This one-day seminar will tackle the tricky skill of writing about intoxication without boring your reader or lapsing into parody. Drawing from a group of diverse authors—Mary Karr, Kingsley Amis, David Foster Wallace, Jay McInerney, Hunter S. Thompson, and Denis Johnson—we will examine how to craft believable altered states of consciousness. Through in class exercises, students will practice using language, punctuation, rhythm, and tone to create inspired scenes of inebriation. This will lead into a larger discussion of how students can use voice to create and change the mood or tone of their work. Both fiction and non-fiction writers are encouraged to join.
