5 Things You Should Know About Cupertino Bakery

It's a favorite hotspot for midday meals, but here are some little-known facts about the eatery that make it stand out.

Sure, you've driven by a bunch of times on your way to Highway-280. But in case you still haven't stopped by Cupertino Bakery on S. De Anza Boulevard--at the corner of Rodrigues Avenue--here are 5 Things that just might change your mind.

  • They've got heart
Cupertino Bakery supports philanthropy. In April, the bakery participated in Dining Out For Life, an initiative across restaurants in the Silicon Valley to help fund the fight against AIDS. Cupertino Bakery also took part in Cupertino’s event, which supplied food and 50 percent of the evening’s revenue to Silicon Valley’s homeless population.
  • They've got soul
The Bakery supports local artists. Artists can display their art on the Bakery walls. Ram Gopal, Cupertino Bakery’s owner, plans to host rotating exhibits of local art for sale. Swing by now and catch Color Fields, a series of six paintings, by Sushanta.
  • They're looking out for everyone
Earlier this year, to better accommodate the variety of dietary needs of his customers, Gopal made the commitment to serve only halal meat at the bakery. Halal meats, similar to notions of Kosher foods in Judaism, are slaughtered and served in accordance with the rules of Islam.
  • They're mixing it up
The bakery hosts on-site dosa parties for parties of 35 or more. Dosas, a savory crepe made from fermented rice flour, are all-stars in South Indian cuisine. The staff comes with everything they need–including griddles for cooking–and whip everything from the classic masala dosa, crepes stuffed with spicy potato filling, to pizza uttapam, thicker dosas covered in marinara sauce, cheese and pizza toppings.
  • They're doing something right
Cupertino Bakery was awarded the Small Business of the Year award in 2010. Cupertino residents, the City of Cupertino and members of the Chamber of Commerce voted to recognize the Bakery, the first time an Indian business has been given the honor, Gopal said.
