Man Made Racial Slurs, Threw Beer Bottle At Man And Son: Police

A 63-year-old man has been arrested on charges including a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon after an incident at Jollyman Park.

CUPERTINO, CA — A 63-year-old man has been arrested on charges including a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon after an incident at Jollyman Park in Cupertino, police and Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies said Friday.

A 38-year-old man said he and his son were confronted April 23 by the 63-year-old "who made racial slurs, pushed him and later threw a beer bottle in his direction," according to authorities. No injuries were reported.

An arrest warrant for the older man, who wasn't named, was obtained this week, police and deputies said in a joint statement.

He was taken into custody by deputies in Cupertino and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

"The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office takes all violent crimes and hate crimes extremely seriously," according to the joint statement. "Hate crimes have no place in Cupertino."

"We encourage anyone who feels threatened, believes they have been targeted, or witnesses suspicious or criminal activity to report it immediately," the statement said.
