Detectives launched an investigation and identified Deputy Roy Chen, 41, as the suspect. A search warrant was issued for his residence in San Jose and he was arrested in Cupertino.

Chen was booked into jail on suspicion of being in possession of child sex abuse material.

On Monday, the Sheriff's Office issued a statement about Chen's arrest and said he had been placed on administrative leave while the police department investigated the case.

"These allegations are extremely serious," wrote Sheriff's Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz. "At the same time, we must respect the integrity of both the criminal and administrative processes and avoid drawing conclusions before the facts are fully established. The Sheriff's Office remains committed to accountability and public trust, and we will take appropriate employment action once those processes are complete."

The Sheriff's Office is also launching its own internal investigation into the matter, Jarosz said.
