Remodeling of The Varsity in Palo Alto
The community's reaction to the remodeling of a historic building into a Borders bookstore
There was a massive amount of controversy surrounding the latest remodeling of historic theatre, The Varsity, located in Palo Alto. Known by many as an important site for film and music alike, and having been around since it's opening in 1927, many people expressed discontent in the reconstruction of this monumental building into a Borders bookstore. Having major influences on the first screened movies as well as huge names in music, including Buddy Rich and Van Morrison, the Varsity represented a sentimental spot for the locals and almost all are sad to see it go.
Of course, the community initially fought back, creating the "Save the Varsity" committee and raising about six million dollars to oppose the changes. Sadly, their efforts weren't enough, although the latest reconstruction proves to have its benefit. It is now financially ensured by the new owners to be earthquake proof. Another positive that the community is content with? The preservation of the theatre's courtyard. While locals aren't particularly thrilled with the changes, there is still so much we as a community can do to oppose the destruction of this historic hot spot.
