Cupertino Has 'Best Street Network Conditions' In Bay Area: Report

The City of Cupertino is proud to announce that the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) has identified Cupertino as having the best street network conditions out of 109 Bay Area agencies. Cupertino received the highest Pavement Condition Index (PCI) score of 85, which is considered “very good.”

“The City’s street network, an essential asset to our residents, businesses, and visitors, is an infrastructure maintained by the City consistent with our general approach and standards,” Mayor Darcy Paul said. “Council decided about six years ago to begin allocating significant funding to maintain and improve our streets. This has not only improved the condition but also extended the life of Cupertino’s street network, saving the City millions of dollars now and in the future. Staff has delivered well-considered and exemplary work here, reflective of what happens when foresight is applied to addressing needs of the community effectively and economically.”

Cupertino’s street network is more than 138 miles in length and covers approximately 26 million square feet (8% of the total area of the City). Spending $1 on pavement preservation saves between $6 to $10 in future rehabilitation and reconstruction costs.

“I want to thank the City Council for its support and foresight in putting aside the budget necessary to maintain our roadways,” Public Works Director Roger Lee said. “Well maintained streets create a better community by conserving the consumption of fossil fuels and helping to reduce noise pollution.”
