Coroner IDs Cyclist Killed In Collision With Caltrain

The 54-year-old man was hit Friday morning on railroad tracks.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – A bicyclist who died in a collision with a Caltrain south of downtown San Jose on Friday morning has been identified as 54-year-old Mauricio Orosco, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Northbound Caltrain No. 329 struck Orosco at the West Virginia Street railroad crossing around 8 a.m., Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said.

He was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Bartholomew said.

The collision marked Caltrain's eighth fatality this year, she said.

There were around 300 passengers on the affected train, which was moved to the San Jose Diridon station where they caught another train to continue their trip, Bartholomew said.

The collision affected commuters traveling between the Diridon and Tamien stations for nearly three hours, according to Bartholomew.

The death is under investigation by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for investigating incidents on Caltrain.
