Cupertino Family Hosting Vigil for Missing Son

The family of Jackson Miller, 23, who went missing from Cupertino in 2010, is banding together with the families of four other missing young men for a vigil at 2 p.m., this Saturday, Sept. 14, in Golden Gate Park to raise awareness and advocate for more police involvement in search efforts.

“Why are five young men, most of them in their early twenties, missing from San Francisco?”, asks a press release from the families. “What is San Francisco Police doing to help locate the missing young men?”

The five families are hoping that the public vigil and the sharing of their “heart wrenching stories”, will bring new light to the missing men’s cases, which are going cold as time passes.

Miller's parents, Gina Funaro and Paul Miller, have not stopped searching for their son, who left their Cupertino home on May 15, 2010, reportedly anxious and depressed. His car and identification were found in San Francisco, and witness sightings place him in the city after the disappearance. Shortly after Miller went missing, family and friends established a Facebook group, and later a website, giving people a place to report potential leads.

Part of the challenge for Miller’s family is that because he went missing from Santa Clara County, the responsibility for the case rests with Sheriff’s deputies there, adding a layer of coordination with San Francisco Police. When potential sightings do come, the police either do not come quickly enough to investigate, or the leads come in too late and with too little information, according to Miller's parents.

The other missing men represented at the vigil on Saturday are Sean Sidi, 19, missing since May 5, 2013; Crishtian Hughes, 20, missing since Feb. 6, 2o13; Shawn Dickerson, 24, missing since Dec. 2, 2011, and; Cameron Remmer, age 31, missing since Oct. 6, 2011.

The families will tell their stories starting at 2 p.m. at the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park, next to the Academy of Science. People coming are asked to wear yellow to the event.
