Cupertino Teen Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Child

Police say the assault happened at the child's school. The suspect worked as a part-time lunchtime monitor and teacher's assistant.

An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting an 8-year-old student at a Sunnyvale school, public safety officials said.

Around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jonathan Chow was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting the 8-year-old girl earlier in the day, according to the city’s Department of Public Safety.

Chow was arrested at Spark Charter School at 739 Morse Ave. and was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, according to public safety officials.

Chow, a Cupertino resident, was working at the school as a part-time lunchtime monitor and extended care teacher’s assistant, public safety officials said. Investigators have not identified any other alleged incidents or victims, according to public safety officials.

The school is an independent nonprofit that operates under an agreement with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, according to its website.

The school opened on Aug. 18 and currently serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade, according to its website.

A call for comment from the school was not immediately returned today. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the department’s investigation unit at (408) 730-7120.
