Don't Pay Your Taxes on April 15

Tax day this year falls on April 18, thanks to a Washington, D.C.-based holiday, so enjoy the three-day reprieve.

Like getting an extension on the due date for a book report, taxpaying procrastinators can breathe that same sigh of relief—for a few more days, anyway.

If you have put off that painful task of filing your taxes, again, fear not! Thanks to a legal holiday in the District of Columbia, you have until midnight Monday to postmark your 1040, 1040ez, 1040a, or whatever other numeric federal form or alphabet-soup schedule you must file.

According to an Internal Revenue Service bulletin on March 7, when Emancipation Day—the April 16 holiday in D.C.—falls on a Saturday, it's observed the day before. This means that on Friday and through the weekend, you can carefully work to owe less and get more on your federal tax returns.

California has followed suit and will also allow residents to file their state taxes on Monday, April 18.

If you still need paper forms and instruction booklets, make your way to one of the  U.S. Post Offices in Cupertino, Los Altos or West San Jose. You can also file online, that is, eFile, for faster processing and a quicker return.
