IRS Revokes Tax Exemption Status on 45 Cupertino Nonprofits
Nationwide 275,000 nonprofits will no longer be eligible for tax exemptions, the IRS announced Wednesday.

The Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday that based on a 2006 law about 275,000 nonprofit organizations—45 of which hold Cupertino addresses—lost their tax-exempt status for failing to file annual reports for three consecutive years.
Most of the organizations are probably defunct, and according to a New York Times article, Lois Lerner, who heads the division that oversees tax-exempt groups, Lerner said there was no way to know if the groups were actually defunct because many were unreachable.
"In many cases, we didn't have a good address because the last one was many years old and they hadn't had to file since then because they weren't big enough," Lerner told the Times.

In 2006, Congress passed the Pension Protection Act which required most tax-exempt organizations to file annual information returns or notices with the IRS, and the law imposed a filing requirement in 2007 for small organizations. That same law automatically revokes tax-exemption for organizations that fail to file returns or notices for three consecutive years.
The IRS plans to help existing organizations regain tax-exemption, including retroactive reinstatement, and according to the Times article, the IRS has a special process and reduced fee of $100 for those nonprofits with less than $25,000 annual revenue that are on the list that want to reapply for tax-exempt status.
