Man Arrested For Suspected DUI Crash That Killed Campbell Woman
The accident was Thursday on Highway 101 near Bailey Avenue.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Ca - A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a head-on crash that killed his passenger on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near San Jose early Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Brandon Gates, a Gilroy resident, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and remains at a hospital to be treated for injuries he suffered in the crash, CHP officials said.
Gates was driving a 2007 Volkswagen carrying a 23-year-old Campbell woman at about 70 mph on southbound Highway 101 near Bailey Avenue shortly before 6 a.m., CHP officials said. The driver lost control of the vehicle that went east off the roadās edge, crashed into a steel guardrail and spun out, according to the CHP.

The Volkswagen came to rest facing north on a southbound lane and was hit head-on by a 2007 Hyundai traveling at 65 mph, CHP officials said.
The Volkswagen spun out and came to rest on the west shoulder, while the Hyundai spun out and crashed into the concrete center median before it stopped on a gravel shoulder, according to the CHP. The Santa Clara County medical examinerās office was called to the scene to take custody of the woman, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene, CHP officials said.

The 27-year-old man was transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose for major injuries, CHP officials said.
The Hyundai driver, a 47-year-old Oakley man, suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to Regional Medical Center, according to the CHP.
The crash blocked part of the highway for more than two hours until all lanes reopened as of 8:20 a.m., according to the CHP.
