SANTA CLARA - A third-party dig-in caused an outage that impacted more than 3,000 customers in southwest Santa Clara Thursday morning, according to city electric utility officials.

The outage that initially affected 3,305 customers began shortly after 10 a.m., according to Silicon Valley Power, the city's electrical provider.

The outage was in an area west of Lawrence Expressway and El Camino Real, utility spokesman Larry Owens said.

As of 10:50 a.m., power was restored to all but 268 customers, who were in an area that included El Camino Real, Lillick Drive and Halford Avenue, utility officials said.

All customers were expected to have power back around noon except for one who was directly impacted by the outage, which was caused by a third-party crew that dug into the utility's underground cable at El Camino Real and Halford Avenue, Owens said.
