Khanna, a 38-year-old lawyer, made the announcement during an event Saturday in Santa Clara, where he said he would run for the 17th Congressional District seat for a second time, according to campaign officials.

Khanna ran against Honda six months ago during the 2014 general election, losing by a 3.6 percent margin in votes. Officials with Honda’s campaign anticipated Khanna’s 2016 campaign announcement and in a statement issued last week said, ā€œAs we know from history, Ro Khanna’s ability to raise money is only surpassed by his ability to squander it.ā€

ā€œMike Honda welcomes the challenge and believes his long history of serving the district honorably and with principle will outweigh the determination of the wealthy interests backing his overly ambitious challenger,ā€ the statement said.

Honda has held the 17th District seat since 2000 and has previously served in the state Assembly and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.

The 17th Congressional District includes the cities of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Milpitas and part of San Jose in Santa Clara County and the cities of Fremont and Newark in Alameda County.
