Santa Clara County Coroner IDs Woman Killed by Car

BREAKING: The elderly victim was a Sunnyvale resident.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A woman fatally struck by a pickup truck in Santa Clara early on the morning of Dec. 19 has been identified as 77-year-old Michiko Aragaki of Sunnyvale, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Aragaki was pushing a shopping cart into the path of oncoming traffic on Lawrence Expressway near Cabrillo Avenue around 6:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol officials said.

Drivers at the intersection were given the green light to cross the road and quickly slowed down when they saw the pedestrian, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

One driver in a pickup truck traveling at nearly 60 mph didn't see the woman and pushed on his brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision, but struck Aragaki, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said.
The truck driver stayed at the scene and waited for officers to arrive, according to Lee.

Aragaki died of multiple blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner's office.
