Silicon Valley BBQ Championship Brings Kansas City Flavor To South Bay

Sixty-four pro barbecue teams and 29 "backyard" teams competed in the Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned event.

SILICON VALLEY, CA -- It wasn't just tech that drew people to Silicon Valley last weekend; instead, it was the second-largest Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned event, held right here in Santa Clara.

Friday and Saturday, 64 pro barbecue teams and 29 "backyard" teams set up shop at Central Park to compete in the Silicon Valley BBQ Championship. When all was said and cooked, the team from Mar-B-Que's BBQ took home the Grand Champion title, while the Reserve Champion award went to Porterhouse BBQ.

In a heated competition heated among backyard teams, five city of Santa Clara teams battled it out for the Mayor's Cup. In the end, Parks on Fire -- a team from Parks and Rec -- won the title.

The event is put on by a collaboration between the Santa Clara Rotary Foundation and the city of Santa Clara.

"Not all competitions are [Kansas City BBQ Society] sanctioned so we're honored to have our event sanctioned," said Lizzy Barron, who helped coordinate the sixth-annual Silicon Valley BBQ Championship.
