Steve Jobs Coming to the Movies; Double Meaning of Apple's Gadget Porn

A look at the ways our favorite backyard tech giant has made the news this week.

Every week, makes news with technology developments, business deals and, more often than not, controversies.

That’s where our weekly "Core Bytes" column on Apple comes in. We’ll relay the past week’s news highlights from our favorite backyard tech giant.

Controveries
Some may refer to Apple products as “gadget porn”. But the name takes a double meaning now that seven links featuring the name iPhone or iPhone 4S are leading to actual porn sites. Apple filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), but are having trouble tracking down the owners since the domain names are protected by a privacy service.

The battle rages on: Apple and Samsung have filed 30 lawsuits against each other in 10 countries. Now European Union antitrust regulators have stepped in, grilling both companies about their use of patents. In a case filed last week, Apple accused its fellow smartphone competitor of having an “egregious” misuse of patents.

New Products
Do you have shorter than expected battery life on your new iPhone 4S? Apple confirmed that this stems from a software issue, and is working on a software update for i0S 5 devices that will eradicate battery life concerns.

Business Deals and Developments
About 15 years ago, Steve Jobs did an interview for the 1996 miniseries "Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires,” which documented Silicon Valley’s rise as a technology hub and the emergence of personal computing. Now Jobs’ interview has resurfaced into its own documentary, “Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview,” which will screen in Landmark Theaters around the country on November 16 and 17.

There’s been a lot of talk of how iPhones are seizing the smartphone market. But some also think it carries the same sway in the video game industry: in a survey of 1,000 employees at a London developers conference, Steve Jobs was ranked as the number one person who shaped the computer game industry. Still, some techies beg to differ.

On Friday morning, Apple unveiled its shiny new Fifth Avenue store in New York City. The store was closed for several months during which the original glass cube entrance was replaced with a sleeker design. While it maintains the same shape and size of the previous cube, it uses only 15 glass panels instead of 90.
