Sunnyvale House Fire Damages Estimated At $800,000

A two-alarm house fire that displaced a family over the weekend in Sunnyvale caused an estimated $800,000 in damages.

SUNNYVALE - A two-alarm house fire that displaced a family over the weekend in Sunnyvale caused an estimated $800,000 in damage, a city Department of Public Safety official said Monday.

Police and firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire in the 600 block of Bernal Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Saturday, public safety officials said.

Crews arrived to find a one-story home in heavy smoke and flames and threatening neighboring residences, according to public safety officials.

A second-alarm response was called and the fire was under control at about 7:50 p.m., public safety officials said. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters stayed at the scene to conduct overhaul and salvage operations, according to public safety officials.

The blaze left an estimated $800,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, public safety Capt. Shawn Ahearn said.

While battling the fire, crews had some problems accessing certain areas of the home where there was unpermitted construction, he said.

Residents displaced by the fire were assisted by family members and didn't need help from the American Red Cross, Ahearn said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
