When is It Time to Start Orthodontic Treatment for Kids?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children are recommended to see an orthodontist by the age of seven.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should see an orthodontist by the age of seven for an evaluation and early identification of any alignment or bite problems. This early exam gives us an opportunity to intervene if there is a problem and prevent further future damage. This is particularly helpful when jaw irregularities are present. Our Cupertino orthodontics expert can make several adjustments to guide the growth of the jaw and improve treatment outcomes.

We use special orthodontic appliances to create space in a crowded jaw, improve facial balance, prevent damage associated with protruding teeth, ensure adequate space for erupting teeth, reduce overall treatment time and reduce the need for future extractions. After the initial stage of treatment, children may have a rest period before their next stage of treatment.

The second phase of treatment will generally be focused on aligning the permanent teeth and ensuring their proper final position. This may include treatment with conventional braces or clear aligners. Other options may be available depending on the child’s needs and complexity. After treatment, retainers will be needed to keep teeth from shifting or relapsing to their original positions. Call us today to learn more or to schedule an appointment with our orthodontist.
