Woman Fatally Struck By VTA Bus

BREAKING: The 56-year-old Sunnyvale woman was pronounced deceased at a hospital not long after the collision, Santa Clara police say.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- A Sunnyvale woman was struck and killed by a VTA bus Thursday in Santa Clara, police said. The fatal collision happened at about 6:20 p.m. at the bus stop near El Camino Real and Railroad Avenue.

In a statement Friday, Santa Clara police Lt. Dan Moreno said it is believed the woman had just exited the bus from the middle doors and walked several feet away on the sidewalk, but as the bus pulled away she began chasing it. In doing so, she stumbled and was struck by the bus, Moreno said.

She suffered major injuries and was treated at the scene by Santa Clara Fire Department personnel, then transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police did not disclose the victim's name Friday but said she was a 56-year-old resident of Sunnyvale.

The investigation is ongoing; police asked anyone with information about the incident is to call Traffic Investigator Dave Machado at 408-615-4764.
