Alongside the big sets, locals saw environmental talks, beach-culture art, surprise guest appearances, and emotional tributes woven through three packed days on the waterfront.
2. WILDCOAST Co-Founder Serge Dedina Receives Inspiring Activism Award -- Environmental Protection (eponline.com) — An environmental leader was just honored at Ohana Fest in Dana Point, where WILDCOAST co-founder Serge Dedina received the Inspiring Activism Award for his marine conservation work. His efforts have helped protect hundreds of thousands of acres of habitat, sea turtle nesting beaches in Mexico, and California's extensive marine protected areas, while also pushing for solutions to Tijuana River pollution.
3. Newport Beach braces for more erosion as Hurricane Polo nears (foxla.com) — Dana Point has already declared a local emergency after Hurricane Marie's flooding battered homes along Beach Road, and now nearby Newport Beach is bracing for more erosion as Hurricane Polo approaches. Coastal communities from Laguna Beach to San Clemente are scrambling to build sand berms, protect rail lines, and monitor dangerous rip currents while residents worry about what a strong El Niño season could bring next.
4. Eddie Vedder Joins Stephen Wilson Jr. for Surprise 'Hunger Strike' Duet at Ohana Fest (wmmr.com) — Fans at Dana Point's Ohana Festival got a surprise when Eddie Vedder walked onstage at Doheny State Beach to join Stephen Wilson Jr. for a powerful duet of "Hunger Strike." The performance revisited Vedder's original Temple of the Dog vocals and highlighted Wilson Jr.'s grunge-meets-country style, which he's been showcasing through covers and new releases.
5. California Wine Festival prepares to uncork California wines and coastal views in Huntington Beach (latimes.com subscription) — Dana Point recently hosted the spring California Wine Festival at Laguna Cliffs Marriott, and now the fall edition is heading up the coast to Huntington Beach on October 16–17. Local wine lovers can sample hundreds of California wines, enjoy bites from nearby restaurants, and support a nonprofit serving siblings of children with special needs, all at Paséa Hotel & Spa overlooking the ocean.
