2010 Greek Games at San Ramon Valley High

Students at San Ramon Valley High School put their team spirit to the test during the annual Greek Games last week.

Last week, many students at San Ramon Valley High participated in the annual Greek Games competition.

Each spring, the week-long Greek Games gives students an opportunity to enjoy a little outdoor fun and friendly competition during lunch-time.  It also provides entertainment for spectators.

Eight teams represented by different colors competed with two captains and ten other players on each team. Games included tug of war, a t-shirt relay in the pool, a game where players knock their opponent of a raft in the pool and a belly flop contest where teams perform skits and are judged on their belly flops.

Day one of the 2010 Greek Games began with a rainy start and the teams came out for a muddy game of tug of war.  The gold team dominated the competition, winning all three matches.

"I love being apart of the Greek Games because of the intensity of the games.  I've never had so much fun during a lunch time event at school" said Tanner Himmelman, a member of the red team.

The next three days brought the players to the pool, where they battled with a t-shirt relay, raft competition and belly flop contest.

Jason Roudnev, the last swimmer of the red team, beat Taylor Munk, the last swimmer of the pink team in the t-shirt relay.  Red took first place, followed by pink, purple, and gold.

Allie Begin won the title of Queen in the raft competition for the purple team. Jessie Esteban for the red team came in second, with Danielle Dunn in third place for green. For king of the raft, the competition for first place between purple and green was a close call.  After verifying a video replay, Brandon Grinstead took home the first place crown for green. C.J. Cappa won second place for purple and Kyle Kragen came in third for the sky blue team.

In the belly flop competition, every team had 30 seconds and two attempts to show off skits and belly flops.  Each team had a theme, including angels, patriotic, Peter Pan, Barbie, prisoners, Pac Man, '80s and tourists. Some belly flops amused the audience and the five staff judges—who looked for the team's creativity, pain, crowd appeal, splash and difficulty— while others made them cringe.

The final obstacle course event involved a potato sack race, foot walker race, wheelbarrow race, and giant inflatable course. After completing the events, two members of the team sprinted across the finish line. The red team finished strong with the fastest course time.

The top two teams will now face off during the Aloha Rally on June 4th.
