Baseball: Wolves Breeze Through First Round With 12-1 Win

The Star: Senior Craig Massoni reached in all four plate appearances, with a single, double, a pair of walks and two RBIs.

The Turning Point: The Wolves put a nine-spot on the board in the fourth inning to ruin any Newark thoughts of an upset.

The Quote: "Newark beat us last year (in NCS) and we knew they're a good team," San Ramon coach Chris deClerq said. "We didn't want to take them for granted and got the early lead."

The Bottom Line: When the Wolves hit like the way they did Wednesday, there are few teams in the section that can keep pace. When John Hockstatter pitches the way he did, there aren't many teams that will have much success. The combination assured San Ramon Valley a quarterfinal game with the winner of Thursday's game between No. 6 California and No. 11 Castro Valley, which was moved back again because Cal's field couldn't handle the rain from Tuesday.

"We know we're going to play a good team Saturday regardless of who wins," deClerq said. "We're going to have to play defense and pitch, but I like our offense against anybody."

Lefty Kyle Slinger will start on the mound for the Wolves.

"He gives us a chance to win every time out," deClerq said. "He's not going to overpower you, but he's going to compete."

Slinger is 4-0 on the year and San Ramon was 6-1 in games he started.
