Boys Basketball: SRV's McNealy Commits to UC Irvine
He plans to redshirt next season for new coach Russ Turner.
Recent San Ramon Valley High graduate Chris McNealy will continue his basketball career at U.C. Irvine, he confirmed Thursday.
McNealy's long recruitment process ended last week when he accepted a scholarship offer from newly-hired coach Russell Turner.
"They are looking to rebuild the program and want me to be the main focus," McNealy said. "They told me they are going to build the team around me."
McNealy became a highly-sought after recruit this year while leading the Wolves to the CIF Northern California semifinals and a 28-4 record. The 6-foot-4 inch guard drew interest from Cal, Boston College, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's among several others.
"The reason it took so long (to committ) was because I wanted to play for coach (Randy) Bennett at Saint Mary's," McNealy said. "I have been playing at their open gyms and was hoping a scholarship would open up."
It didn't happen, but when Turner contact McNealy about taking a visit to the Orange County school, he jumped at the chance.
"I said I'll go take a visit and when I got there everything seemed right," McNealy said. "I really like the new coaching staff and Russ Turner. There was a good vibe, I was able to connect with my future teammates and there are great academics."
McNealy is undecided about a major, but said he is thinking about pursuing film.
He also said that despite Turner's vision for him to come in an contribute significantly right away, he plans to redshirt next year to get stronger.
"I think it'll help me in the long run," McNealy said.
McNealy's decsion was announced on the Anteaters' official website today.
"I am excited to announce the signing of Chris McNealy," Turner said. "He is a winner both on and off the court and is the type of player I hope to attract to UCI. He is versatile and smart and plays at a high level on both ends of the court. I really like the fact that Chris comes from a basketball family, and I think he is a perfect fit for the up-tempo style of play I want to implement. This is exciting news for our program and I am proud of the team effort we put forth to earn Chris' commitment."
