Boys golf: San Ramon turns in best performance of the year

Wolves beat Monte Vista 181-196 in battle of Danville

If the San Ramon Valley High boys golf team plays like it did today for the rest of the season, it could be headed to the CIF State Championships.

The Wolves were 6-over as a team in a 181-196 win over rival Monte Vista at Crow Canyon Country Club.

"This was our best round of the year," San Ramon Valley coach Brian Barr said. "There is always a lot of pressure in the Monte Vista match. There is a lot of emotion involved and the kids have to stay under control."

None were better than Cody Blick.

The sophomore was the lone player in the red with a 1-under 34 — his second-best 9-hole score of the season and his best on the back nine at Crow Canyon.

"It was all there, we just connected," Blick said. "It's a great way to end the regular season going into the league tournament and then NCS."

San Ramon finishes the regular season 11-3 and still has a chance to claim the East Bay Athletic League title depending on the outcome of the league tournament at Legends Golf Course at Diablo Grande in Patterson on May 3. Foothill, with just one loss, sits in first place, but the Wolves edged the Falcons by three strokes at Crow on March 18, 185-188.

Zach Moya, Harrison Quinlan and Nate Matherson all shot 1-over, 36's for San Ramon and Eric Newburn rounded out the scoring with a 39.

"We're starting to play well at the right time," Barr said. "We still have a chance at the league title."

Erik Adcock was the low score for the Mustangs with a 36, while J.J. Sedlock, who won the Transbay Touranment at Rossmoor on Monday, carded a 38.

"The kids just need to get in a good frame of mind, build some momentum and stay positive," Monte Vista coach Brook Rogers said. "Hopefully the guys can step up and motivate each other."

Kyle Bowser shot a 40, while Chris Raphael and R.J. Magat both shot 41's to round out the scoring for Monte Vista (9-4).

The teams will meet again at Crow Canyon next week in the first-ever "Danville Cup," a Ryder Cup-style event inspired by similar events other high schools in the section run.

"(Barr) and I talked about it — some of the other cities with two high schools do the same type of thing — it will be a fun thing to do near the end of the year," Rogers said.

Monte Vista will finish up its regular season with a match against De La Salle on Tuesday at Diablo Country Club.
