Community Rallies After Tragic Accident Leaves East Bay Teen Paralyzed

DANVILLE, CA— The East Bay community is rallying to raise money for a former San Ramon Valley High School football player who was paralyzed from the chest down after he fell into a pool, injuring himself at a graduation party the day before he was to graduate. He remains hospitalized.

School officials say Javier was recognized at the San Ramon Valley High graduation on Friday. One of his friends accepted Jake’s diploma on his behalf.

"This was a tragic accident and our thoughts are with Jake and his family," school district spokesperson Elizabeth Grasswich said."The school staff, students and parents pulled together last week in support of Jake and each other. We will continue to support students and staff as needed."

As word of the tragic accident spread, Javier's sister, Gabby Javier, tweeted, "It's always been Jake's dream to play college ball, I can't believe that opportunity has been stripped from him after becoming so close."

A GoFundMe page established to help raise money to pay for Javier's recovery has garnered $159,346.

According to family members, Jake Javier planned to attend Cal Poly in the fall.
