Since it was founded on April 9th, Danville Fighting COVID (DFC), an organization focused on supplying local hospitals with PPE, has collected nearly 1,600 face shields. Started by high school students in Danville and Alamo, DFC has been successful in rallying local makers (owners of 3D printers) to manufacture face shields for their initiative.
By expediting each step of production, DFC has created a streamlined flow of protective equipment directly from the community to local healthcare workers. Makers have easy access to necessary files and instructions on the DFC website as well as custom bulk-print options to reduce production time. Additionally, makers can receive filament from DFC’s stock when they are running low and outsource any maintenance and repairs to DFC's 3D printer team. These enhancements have established face shield production as DFC's primary program; however, Danville Fighting COVID still encourages the community to donate to their professionally-manufactured PPE collection program as well as make monetary contributions.
As the face shield frames are printed, DFC members prepare the transparencies, clear plastic sheets which complete the face shields, by rounding the corners and hole-punching slots. The frames and transparencies are then collected at a central location, allowing for donations to be made in bulk. Following the hospital’s sanitation process, the face shields are quickly assembled as the transparencies easily snap on to the 3D-printed frames.

Over the last nine weeks, DFC has donated face shields to John Muir Health Walnut Creek and Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek. While their initial goal was to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 in their local community, co-founder and drop-off manager Ameesh Daryani (17) states, “It is imperative that we expand our focus to Alameda County and other areas in need as DFC continues to grow.” With the foundation that they have built and the continued support of the community, Danville Fighting COVID aspires to increase both its level of production and its service area, providing assistance to a wider variety of healthcare professionals.
