Phone Scam Warning Issued By Danville Police

The criminals use technology to make it look like the call coming in on your caller ID is from the police department's front desk number.

DANVILLE, CA — The Danville Police Department said Tuesday that it is continuing to get reports from residents who say they're getting calls from con artists pretending to be Danville police officers. The scammers try to talk victims into purchasing gift cards as a means of avoiding a warrant, according to the department. Police said residents should immediately hang up on these callers.

"It gets challenging, because the criminals use technology to make it look like the call coming in on your caller ID is from the police department's front desk number, (925) 314-3700," Danville PD reported. "We can tell you with full confidence that the Danville Police Department will not call you to ask for money, gift cards or anything of that nature over the phone. If you receive a call like this, simply hang up."

In addition to reporting scam calls to local law enforcement, residents are urged to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Complaints help the FTC and other law enforcement agencies bring scam artists to justice and put an end to unfair and misleading business practices. If you have a complaint, file it online or call 1-877-FTC-HELP.
