Danville Teen Builds App To Help Other Teens Find Local Job

DANVILLE, CA — If you want someone local and trustworthy to walk your dog, mow your lawn, or babysit your kid and help them with their math homework, you no longer need to plumb the depths of Nextdoor and Craigslist. Rohan Arora, a senior at Monte Vista High School, has created a new app called KidGig to match local teenagers aged 13-17 with jobs in the community.

“I'm always looking for ways to make a little money, and I was the kid replying to Nextdoor posts whenever a neighbor needed a tutor or some help around the house,” Arora, 17, told Patch in an email. “It worked, but it was scattered and disorganized. Posts get buried, and you're sorting out payment and scheduling yourself. So I built KidGig for teens 13–17 to find local jobs neighbors post, with payments, messaging and notifications all organized in one place.”

Community members can post jobs within the app, and then review candidates based on ratings and past jobs. All payment and communication is handled inside the app. Arora detailed numerous security features. No one under 13 can sign up for the app. Addresses are never shown. Every completed job gets a two-way rating, and any user can be reported or blocked.

Arora said that over 100 people in the Danville and greater Tri-Valley area have already signed up, and the app has helped connect over 20 local teens to small jobs. Now, he just needs community members to post jobs.

“The app only works if neighbors post jobs,” he said. “There are plenty of local teens signed up and ready to work, what we need are adults posting the small stuff they need help with. If you've got a dog that needs walking or a yard that needs weeding, posting it takes a minute and gives a kid in your neighborhood a real shot at earning.”
